MEGA Millions Changes FAQ's

Questions & Answers

1. What are the changes to the way players select numbers?

The CHOOSE 5 numbers portion will change from picking five numbers from 1 to 56 to picking 5 numbers from 1 to 75.  The  Mega number portion of the play will change from picking one number from 1 to 46 to picking one number from 1 to 15

2. When will these changes be taking place?

The LAST draw using the old rules is October 18, 2013.
The FIRST draw under the new rules is October 22, 2013.
Playslips reflecting the new changes will be in use starting on October 19, 2013.

3. What do these changes do to the odds?

The overall odds of winning change from 1 in 40 to 1 in 15.    The Jackpot odds change from 1 in 176 million to 1 in 259 million.

4. How will these changes affect the Jackpot?

The starting Jackpot for MEGA Millions will now be $15 million (instead of $12 million) with a minimum increase of $5 million guaranteed until larger increases are afforded.

5. Why is MEGA Millions changing the payout annuity from 26 to 30 years?

A 30 year annuity payout is becoming standard for large in-state and multi-state lottery games.  The MEGA Millions consortium, of which California is a part, is changing MEGA Millions’s 26-year annuity payout to 30 years to be consistent with POWERBALL and SuperLotto Plus.

In order for MEGA Millions to continue offering Jackpots which start at $15 million and increase by at least $5 million if not won.

6. What if I bought an Advance Play ticket before October 18, 2013 (the last drawing with the current matrix)?

The Lottery will be restricting the purchase of Advanced Plays that extend past October 18, 2013, beginning 20 draws prior to the October 22, 2013 drawing (the first drawing that incorporates the changes). The Advanced Play restrictions begin August 13, 2013. On October 19th players will once again be able to purchase up to 20 Advance Plays.

7. Other states have a Megaplier – why not California?

Since California is a pari-mutuel state by law, the multiplier is not an feature we can offer due to the fact that prize values are not fixed, but depend on sales and the number of winning tickets

8. Other states offer a guaranteed $1 million 5 of 5 prize, why not California?

Since California is a pari-mutuel state by law, we can only fund the prize pool rather than offer specific prizes, however, in many cases the shared pari-mutuel prize is in excess of the offered fixed prizes.
