California Lottery certified at Level Three by the WLA!

Responsible Gaming is important to everyone at the California Lottery, from our employees to our retailers, vendors and players. The Lottery’s Responsible Gaming Program is one of the strongest in the nation, and given the size of the California Lottery and the amount of supplemental funding it provides to public education every year, achieving a Level Three status from the World Lottery Association (WLA) is a significant accomplishment. The California Lottery is pleased it is one of the few lotteries in the nation to achieve this prestigious certification.

The WLA’s core values are responsibility, integrity, professionalism and innovation, standards that advance the interests of state-operated lotteries regarding best practices and ethical standards. The California Lottery received this certification by submitting an extensive application and self-assessment detailing its Responsible Gaming program. The assessment revealed that since its creation the California Lottery has been a strong supporter, developer and promoter of Responsible Gaming programs. It also pioneered the first problem gambling prevention effort when it created California’s problem gambling hotline.

Further, the relationship between the California Lottery and the Office of Problem Gambling (OPG) continues to be mutually beneficial. The California Lottery, in cooperation with OPG, produced a series of Public Service Announcements as additional tools to publicize problem gambling prevention efforts. Those PSA’s were translated into six languages.

The WLA represents more than 140 member lotteries from Global Professional Association of State Lottery and Gaming organizations in 90 countries and five continents. Only five of its global members have achieved a Level Three Responsible Gaming Certification.

The mission of the California Lottery is to maximize supplemental funding to California public schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. More than 95 cents of every dollar spent by our players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retail compensation. Since 2000, Lottery players have contributed $1 billion to public schools each year. While that amount is impressive, once those enhancement dollars are divided up to all California public schools, it becomes more modest. However, schools tell us these supplemental annual contributions are vital to the on-going funding of special programs, instructional materials and educational equipment.
